Kai Schlegelmilch is a banker and graduate economist. He studied economics in Frankfurt am Main (including environmental economics and fiscal policy). After working full-time at the Wuppertal Institute and the European Environment Agency/DK, he joined the Federal Ministry for the Environment in 1999. There he works on energy and climate policy, the EU, marine nature conservation and, since 2019, “nature and environmental protection in agriculture,” with a focus on economic and fiscal issues. He has also worked at the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) and the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN). He played a leading role in establishing the former European branch of FÖS: Green Budget Europe (GBE). In addition, he occasionally undertakes activities outside the BMUV, e.g., for GIZ, Danida, and the EU Commission, particularly in the Global South.
