As mayor of Kassel (1975-1991), Hans Eichel advocated for decentralized energy supply (municipal power plant, combined heat and power, municipal power grid, expansion of district heating, and improvement of the urban climate through increased tree planting (including Beuys' “7000 Eichen” project). As Minister President of Hesse (1991-1999), he later promoted the Rhön Biosphere Reserve, organic farming, and ecological forestry. In his role as Federal Minister of Finance, he supported the implementation of an ecological tax reform, the Renewable Energy Sources Act, and the Hundred Thousand Roofs Program.
